Ingredients

  • 1 lb. lean ground beef
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 green pepper
  • 2 to 3 tsp. chili powder
  • 2 tsp. sugar
  • 1 (10 3/4 oz.) can condensed tomato soup
  • salt and pepper
  • 4 sandwich buns (such as hamburger buns, onion rolls, English muffins)
  • butter or margarine

Method

  • Cook beef in an 8 to 10-inch frying pan on medium-high heat for 5 minutes or until meat begins to brown.
  • Break meat into fine crumbs as it cooks.
  • While beef cooks, chop onion and green pepper. Add onion and pepper to beef along with chili powder.
  • Cook, stirring, for about 15 minutes or until onion is translucent.
  • Stir in sugar and soup.
  • Cook for 3 to 4 minutes more, until hot and bubbly.
  • Add salt and pepper to taste; keep hot.
  • Split sandwich buns crosswise.
  • Lightly butter cut sides.
  • Toast in a broiler or toaster oven.
  • Spoon hot Sloppy Joes mixture over toasted buns. Serve hot.
