Ingredients

  • 2 packets active dry yeast
  • 1/2 c. milk
  • 1 c. cold water
  • 1/4 c. butter or margarine
  • 1/4 c. honey
  • 1 c. raisins
  • 2 c. uncooked oats
  • 6 to 6 1/2 c. bread flour
  • 2 tsp. salt

Method

  • Dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup of warm water.
  • Combine milk and cold water and heat until almost boiling.
  • Pour hot liquid over butter, honey, raisins and salt in a large bowl and stir until butter melts.
  • Cool to lukewarm.
  • Add the yeast mixture and oats. Beat in 2 cups of the flour until mixture is smooth.
  • Add remaining flour and stir to make a soft dough.
  • Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until elastic, about 10 minutes. Place in a greased bowl.
  • Turn to coat and let stand, covered, until doubled in size.
  • Punch dough down and shape to form 2 loaves.
  • Place in greased loaf pans.
  • Cover and let rise until nearly doubled.
  • Bake at 375° for 45 minutes or until bread sounds hollow when tapped.
  • Cool on racks.
  • Yields 2 loaves.
