Ingredients

  • 6 c. plain flour
  • 2 c. buttermilk
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 Tbsp. baking powder

Method

  • In a large mixing bowl, heat milk and margarine until warm (not hot); stir in sugar and add yeast (until dissolved), then add flour (the consistency of cake dough).
  • Set aside to rise for 1 to 2 hours in a warm place.
  • Then add 2 or more cups of flour as needed, until dough becomes tacky.
  • Add salt, soda and baking powder; mix.
  • Make into balls and dip into warm butter.
  • Put into muffin tins.
  • Let rise in a warm place for 2 hours and bake in a hot oven.
