Ingredients

  • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) butter or shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons ginger
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup (optional) chopped nuts

Method

  • Heat oven to 350°F.
  • Beat butter with sugar and molasses.
  • Mix in egg.
  • Sift dry ingredients and add to wet mixture, alternately with water, until just combined.
  • Bake in greased 9-inch square pan 40 minutes.
  • Cool.
