Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 c. flour
  • 1 3/4 c. sugar
  • 2/3 c. shortening
  • 1 3/4 tsp. soda
  • 1/3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. water
  • 2 to 3 eggs (depending on size)
  • 2/3 c. cocoa
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Method

  • Cream sugar, shortening, eggs and vanilla.
  • Combine dry ingredients.
  • Add alternately with the water.
  • Makes 2 layers or a 9 x 13-inch loaf cake.
  • Bake at 350° until cake tests done, 25 to 35 minutes.
  • Mom always frosted it with chocolate icing and it seemed there was always chocolate cake in the cake saver.
