Ingredients
- 4 to 6 c. green leaf lettuce, freshly picked
- 1 c. chopped young sweet green onions
- 1/3 c. bacon grease or oil
- 1/3 c. white vinegar
- 1/3 c. water
- 1/8 tsp. sugar
- 1/8 tsp. salt
- 1/8 tsp. black pepper
- fried bacon, broken in pieces (optional)
Method
- Wash lettuce and pat dry with paper towels.
- Combine lettuce and onions in a large bowl.
- Set aside.
- In a saucepan over high heat, combine oil, vinegar, water and sugar.
- Bring vinegar mixture to a boil (do not boil in microwave) and pour over the lettuce and onions, stirring and turning the lettuce so most of the lettuce comes in contact with the hot mixture.
- Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
- Add bacon, if desired.
