Ingredients

  • 1/2 to 2/3 c. sugar
  • 1 heaping Tbsp. shortening
  • 2 c. milk
  • flour
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 2 c. boiling water
  • 1 cake compressed yeast

Method

  • Pour boiling water over sugar, salt and shortening.
  • Scald milk and pour on above.
  • When lukewarm, add yeast.
  • Add enough flour until dough is able to be kneaded.
  • Put dough on floured board and knead, adding flour as necessary.
  • Knead until smooth and elastic.
  • Put dough into greased bowl.
  • Rub butter or shortening on top.
  • Cover and let rise until doubled in size. Punch down; let rise in bowl again until double in size.
