Ingredients
- 1/2 c. shortening (1/2 margarine)
- 1/4 c. brown sugar, packed
- 1 egg yolk (use white later)
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- 1 c. flour
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- chopped nuts
Method
- Mix thoroughly the first 4 ingredients.
- Sift and stir in flour and salt.
- Roll into 1-inch balls; dip in slightly beaten egg white and roll in finely chopped nuts (3/4 cup).
- Place 1-inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
- Press thumb in center of each.
- Bake at 375° for 10 to 12 minutes.
- Cool.
- Fill centers with candied fruit, jelly or tinted confectioners sugar icing. Makes about 2 dozen (1 1/2-inch) cookies.
