Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening (1/2 margarine)
  • 1/4 c. brown sugar, packed
  • 1 egg yolk (use white later)
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. flour
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • chopped nuts

Method

  • Mix thoroughly the first 4 ingredients.
  • Sift and stir in flour and salt.
  • Roll into 1-inch balls; dip in slightly beaten egg white and roll in finely chopped nuts (3/4 cup).
  • Place 1-inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
  • Press thumb in center of each.
  • Bake at 375° for 10 to 12 minutes.
  • Cool.
  • Fill centers with candied fruit, jelly or tinted confectioners sugar icing. Makes about 2 dozen (1 1/2-inch) cookies.
