Ingredients

  • 4 c. sliced, fresh berries
  • 2 to 3 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1/3 to 1/2 c. milk
  • 1 Tbsp. butter or oleo, melted
  • 1/3 c. firmly packed brown sugar
  • whipped cream

Method

  • Combine sliced berries and sugar, stirring gently.
  • Chill 1 to 2 hours.
  • Combine flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Cut in shortening with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal.
  • Gradually add enough milk to form a soft dough, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened.
  • Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead 4 or 5 times.
  • Roll the dough into an 11 x 8-inch rectangle on a lightly floured surface.
