Ingredients

  • 1 c. butter, softened
  • 2 1/4 c. sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 4 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 c. buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Method

  • Cream butter in a large bowl.
  • Gradually add sugar, beating well at medium speed of an electric mixer.
  • Add eggs, beating well.
  • Combine flour, baking powder, soda and nutmeg.
  • Add flour mixture to creamed mixture, alternately with buttermilk, mixing well.
  • Stir in vanilla.
  • Drop dough by tablespoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets.
  • Bake at 375° for 8 to 10 minutes or until Tea Cakes are lightly browned.
  • Cool on wire racks.
  • Yields 6 dozen.
