Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. allspice
  • 2 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs, unbeaten
  • 1 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 2 c. sifted flour
  • 3/4 c. chopped dates
  • 3/4 c. raisins
  • 1 1/2 c. unsweetened applesauce
  • 3/4 c. nuts, chopped fine

Method

  • Blend shortening, sugar, spices and cocoa. Cream well. Add eggs, beating well after each addition. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons flour over fruit. Add flour with soda alternately with applesauce, beating until smooth.
  • Last add the nuts and raisins to batter. Bake in angel food pan or 10 x 10-inch loaf pan for 55 to 60 minutes at 350°.
  • Very moist and does not need icing.
