Ingredients
- 4 c. cubed, day-old, firm white or French bread
- 2 c. shredded Cheddar cheese
- 10 eggs, lightly beaten
- 1 qt. milk
- 1 tsp. salt
- dash of pepper
- 1/4 tsp. onion powder
- 8 to 10 slices cooked bacon, crumbled
- 1/2 c. sliced mushrooms
- 1/2 c. chopped, peeled tomato
Method
- Generously butter a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
- Arrange bread cubes in dish and sprinkle with cheese.
- Beat eggs, milk, dry mustard, salt, dash of fresh ground pepper and onion powder together and pour over cheese and bread.
- Sprinkle with bacon, mushrooms and tomato.
- Cover and chill up to 24 hours.
- Bake at 325°, uncovered, until set (about 1 hour).
- Tent with foil if top begins to overbrown.
