Ingredients

  • 4 c. cubed, day-old, firm white or French bread
  • 2 c. shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 10 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 qt. milk
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • dash of pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. onion powder
  • 8 to 10 slices cooked bacon, crumbled
  • 1/2 c. sliced mushrooms
  • 1/2 c. chopped, peeled tomato

Method

  • Generously butter a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
  • Arrange bread cubes in dish and sprinkle with cheese.
  • Beat eggs, milk, dry mustard, salt, dash of fresh ground pepper and onion powder together and pour over cheese and bread.
  • Sprinkle with bacon, mushrooms and tomato.
  • Cover and chill up to 24 hours.
  • Bake at 325°, uncovered, until set (about 1 hour).
  • Tent with foil if top begins to overbrown.
