Ingredients

  • 4 small green apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 3/4 c. sugar
  • 2 c. plus 2 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. milk
  • 1/2 c. salad oil
  • hot salad oil

Method

  • Cook apples in a saucepan over low heat about 20 minutes or until tender.
  • Combine sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, cinnamon and nutmeg; stir into apples and cook over low heat until thickened, stirring often.
  • Set aside.
  • Combine 2 cups flour, salt, milk and 1/2 cup oil in a mixing bowl; stir with a fork until mixture forms a ball.
  • Divide mixture in half.
  • Roll each ball out on a lightly floured board to 1/8 inch thickness; cut with a 2 1/2 inch biscuit cutter.
  • Spoon about 3/4 teaspoon apple mixture on half of each pastry circle.
  • Moisten edges with water.
  • Fold in half and press with a fork to seal.
  • Fry turnovers in 1 inch of hot oil until lightly browned, turning once.
  • Drain on paper towels.
  • Yield: about 3 dozen turnovers.
