Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. water
  • 1/2 c. sugar (heaping)
  • 1/2 c. dark brown sugar, packed
  • 2 Tbsp. Grandma's molasses or Karo syrup
  • 1/2 stick oleo
  • 1 Tbsp. shortening
  • 2 pkg. yeast, dissolved in 1/2 c. warm water
  • 3 c. rye flour
  • 3 to 3 1/2 c. white flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • melted butter

Method

  • Bring to boil 1 1/2 cups water, sugar and dark brown sugar. Remove from heat and add molasses or Karo syrup, oleo and shortening. Cool to lukewarm. Dissolve yeast in warm water. Let stand several minutes before adding to mixture. Add 3 cups rye flour. Let rise until doubled in size. Knead in white flour and salt. Let rise again. Form into 2 loaves and let rise. Bake at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes. Brush tops with butter. Makes 2 loaves.
