Ingredients

  • 3/4 cups Vegetable Shortening
  • 1 cup Packed Golden Brown Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Ginger
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoons Ground Nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoons Ground Black Pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoons Ground Allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoons Ground Cloves
  • 1 whole Egg
  • 1/4 cups Molasses
  • 2-1/4 cups Flour
  • Granulated Or Sanding Sugar, For Rolling Cookies

Method

  • This recipe makes approximately 60 cookies.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F.
  • Beat shortening in a large bowl. Add brown sugar, soda, and spices, and beat until combined. Beat in egg and molasses until combined.
  • Beat in flour (it will be very stiff).
  • Shape dough into 1" balls. Roll in granulated or sanding sugar and place 2" apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until set and tops are crackled.
  • This is a wonderful, chewy-in-the-center cookie (or you can make it crunchy by cooking it longer), and my very favorite. I love to seal these in cellophane bags and give them to family at Christmas, all tied up with pretty bows.
