Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 5 Tbsp. oil (corn or vegetable oil)
  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 1 c. buttermilk, warmed

Method

  • Mix together the dry ingredients. Dissolve the yeast in slightly warmed buttermilk.
  • Combine dry ingredients, oil, yeast and buttermilk, stirring lightly and quickly until mixed. Turn onto a lightly floured board and knead gently about 20 to 30 times.
  • Roll out or pat to a 1/4-inch thickness.
  • Cut with a floured 1-inch biscuit cutter.
  • Place on ungreased baking sheet. Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 2 hours.
  • Bake at 375° for 12 to 15 minutes.
