Ingredients

  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. butter
  • 1 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 heaping tsp. baking powder
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 c. brown sugar
  • 1 c. chopped nuts or chocolate chips

Method

  • Cream sugar and butter.
  • Add flour, baking powder, salt, vanilla and egg yolks.
  • Pack this crumbly mixture into a buttered 9 x 12-inch pan.
  • Beat the egg whites until fluffy, then beat in the brown sugar.
  • Stir in nuts or chocolate chips.
  • Spread this topping on top of the first mixture; place the pan into a moderate oven for about 30 to 35 minutes.
  • When cool, cut into bars.
