Ingredients

  • 2 oz. red cake coloring
  • 1 1/2 c. and 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 c. shortening or margarine
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. fresh buttermilk
  • 2 1/2 c. sifted cake flour
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 Tbsp. vinegar

Method

  • Cream sugar, shortening and eggs.
  • Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring, then add to sugar mixture.
  • Add buttermilk alternately with flour.
  • Mix soda and vinegar together and fold in carefully.
  • Bake in 9-inch pans for 25 to 30 minutes at 350°.
