Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. Crisco
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 oz. red food coloring
  • 2 tsp. cocoa
  • 2 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. vinegar

Method

  • Cream shortening, sugar and eggs until light and fluffy.
  • Mix cocoa and food coloring.
  • Add to creamed mixture.
  • Add buttermilk alternately with sifted flour and salt.
  • Stir in vanilla.
  • Add soda to vinegar.
  • Blend into first mixture (do not beat).
  • For a 2 layer cake, grease and flour 2 (9-inch) pans and bake 30 minutes at 350°.
  • (This cake has an unusual texture.)
