Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1 oz. red food coloring
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 2 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. vinegar
  • 1 tsp. baking soda

Method

  • Cream shortening and sugar together.
  • Add eggs and beat well. Make paste with cocoa and food coloring; add to cream mixture. Mix salt, vanilla and buttermilk and add alternately with flour to creamed mixture.
  • Mix soda and vinegar and fold into the mixture. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes in 2 (9-inch) layer pans, greased and floured.
