Ingredients

  • 8 c. flour
  • 1/2 lb. shortening (1/2 lb.)
  • 1 c. milk
  • 6 tsp. baking powder
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. vanilla

Method

  • Blend sugar and shortening.
  • Add eggs and vanilla.
  • Sift dry ingredients and add alternately with milk to combine all the ingredients.
  • Knead well.
  • Roll out on floured board to about 1/4-inch thickness and cut into 3-inch squares.
  • Fill with either poppy seed or crushed walnuts.
  • Pinch two opposite ends together. Lay folded side down on greased tin.
  • Or, instead of cutting into squares, spread poppy seed or walnuts across dough and roll like jelly roll.
  • Cut into slices.
  • Bake immediately at 375° for 15 to 20 minutes.
