Ingredients
- 8 c. flour
- 1/2 lb. shortening (1/2 lb.)
- 1 c. milk
- 6 tsp. baking powder
- 4 eggs
- 1 c. sugar
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 2 tsp. vanilla
Method
- Blend sugar and shortening.
- Add eggs and vanilla.
- Sift dry ingredients and add alternately with milk to combine all the ingredients.
- Knead well.
- Roll out on floured board to about 1/4-inch thickness and cut into 3-inch squares.
- Fill with either poppy seed or crushed walnuts.
- Pinch two opposite ends together. Lay folded side down on greased tin.
- Or, instead of cutting into squares, spread poppy seed or walnuts across dough and roll like jelly roll.
- Cut into slices.
- Bake immediately at 375° for 15 to 20 minutes.
