Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lb. beef round steak (3/4-inch thick)
  • 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 (16 oz.) can stewed tomatoes
  • 1/2 c. chopped celery
  • 1/2 c. chopped carrot
  • 2 Tbsp. chopped onion
  • 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 c. shredded sharp American cheese

Method

  • Cut meat into 4 portions.
  • Mix flour and salt.
  • Pound into meat.
  • Set aside remaining flour.
  • Brown meat in small amount hot shortening.
  • Place meat in shallow baking dish.
  • Blend remaining flour with drippings in skillet.
  • Add remaining ingredients, except cheese.
  • Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture boils. Pour over meat.
  • Cover and bake in 350° oven for 2 hours or until tender.
  • Top with cheese.
  • Return to oven for a few minutes. Serves 4.
