Ingredients

  • 4 c. flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 stick butter
  • 1 to 1 1/2 c. buttermilk (may need more)
  • 1 c. raisins
  • 1 Tbsp. caraway seed

Method

  • Mix flour with dry ingredients.
  • Cut in butter.
  • Add raisins and caraway seed.
  • Make a well and add enough buttermilk to make soft dough.
  • Knead on lightly floured board for about 5 minutes. Shape into round loaf.
  • Place on lightly floured baking pan and cut cross on top.
  • Bake at 400° for 50 minutes (should sound hollow when bottom is tapped).
