Ingredients

  • 3/4 c. butter
  • 3/4 c. shortening
  • 1 c. white sugar
  • 1 c. brown sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. cloves
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. allspice
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 4 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. nuts, chopped fine

Method

  • Cream together butter, shortening and sugars.
  • Add eggs; cream again.
  • Sift dry ingredients together.
  • Add to creamed mixture; blend.
  • Stir in vanilla and nuts.
  • This is a stiff dough.
  • Mold into long squares or rectangles, or press into foil boxes or juice cans, to shape.
  • Refrigerate overnight or freeze.
  • Slice thin. Place 1/2 inch apart on a greased cookie sheet.
  • Bake at 450° for 7 to 8 minutes.
  • Remove from cookie sheet quickly.
  • Cool on a rack. Empty foil boxes or cans are good "shapers" and all cookies will be the same size.
  • These cookies will keep indefinitely, if you hide them!
