Ingredients

  • 4 Tbsp. flour
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. powdered alum
  • 1 pt. cold water
  • 5 drops oil of cloves

Method

  • Mix flour, sugar and alum together.
  • Add a small amount of the pint of cold water and stir well to make a paste, to prevent lumps in the finished paste.
  • Heat the remainder of the water to boiling point in a 2 qt. pan.
  • While stirring, slowly add the paste to the boiling water.
  • Cook until thick, stirring.
  • Paste will be thicker when cold.
  • Stir in oil of cloves.
  • Pour into a small bowl and cover with one thickness of cloth to prevent crusting.
  • When cold, put into sterilized jars with tight fitting lids.
