Ingredients
- 1 c. shortening
- 2 c. sugar
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 2 1/2 c. plain flour
- 1/2 c. boiling water
- 4 eggs, separated
- 1 tsp. soda
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 bar German chocolate
Method
- Whip egg whites and set aside.
- Dissolve 1 bar chocolate in 1/2 cup boiling water.
- Set aside.
- Cream shortening and sugar well.
- Add beaten egg yolks; mix well.
- Add 3/4 cup of milk alternately with flour.
- Add soda to 1/4 cup milk; add to batter and mix well.
- Add vanilla and chocolate.
- Fold in egg whites. Bake at 350° in four 9-inch layer pans until done.
