Ingredients

  • 1 c. shortening
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 2 1/2 c. plain flour
  • 1/2 c. boiling water
  • 4 eggs, separated
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 bar German chocolate

Method

  • Whip egg whites and set aside.
  • Dissolve 1 bar chocolate in 1/2 cup boiling water.
  • Set aside.
  • Cream shortening and sugar well.
  • Add beaten egg yolks; mix well.
  • Add 3/4 cup of milk alternately with flour.
  • Add soda to 1/4 cup milk; add to batter and mix well.
  • Add vanilla and chocolate.
  • Fold in egg whites. Bake at 350° in four 9-inch layer pans until done.
