Ingredients

  • 2 cakes compressed or granular yeast
  • 1 1/2 c. milk
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 5 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 c. shortening (oil)
  • 2 eggs

Method

  • Heat milk to lukewarm.
  • Add sugar. Dissolve yeast in milk and let stand 5 minutes.
  • Add 3 cups of flour and beat vigorously. Add salt and eggs and beat well again.
  • Add melted shortening or oil.
  • When well blended, gradually add remaining flour.
  • When stiff, turn onto floured board and knead.
  • Return to oiled bowl to rise until double in bulk.
  • Punch down and let rise again.
  • When light, knead before shaping into desired types of rolls.
  • Bake at 375° for 18 minutes.
