Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 pound Thinly Sliced Red Cabbage
  • 1 whole Onion, Chopped
  • 1 Tablespoon Shortening
  • 1-1/2 cup Water
  • 1/2 cups White Vinegar (can Use Apple Cider Vinegar If Desired)
  • 1/2 cups Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/4 teaspoons Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Caraway Seeds
  • 2 teaspoons Flour

Method

  • Brown onion in shortening until golden brown. Do not fully brown.
  • Add water, vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper to the onions and bring the liquid to a boil.
  • Place cabbage in the liquid. Slightly crack and grind caraway seeds in your hands as you sprinkle them over the cabbage. This will help them release the maximum amount of flavor.
  • Boil for approximately 30 minutes until the cabbage has become wilted and soft. Stir occassionaly to evenly cook.
  • Sprinkle with flour to thicken the remaining liquid slightly and boil for a few more seconds until desired "doneness" is achieved. They should be wilted and soft, but not mushy.
  • Serve along side your Szriskes and dumplings.
