Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 c. white sugar
  • 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 1 c. shortening or lard
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. cloves
  • 1 c. sour milk
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 c. chocolate chips
  • 1/2 c. white sugar

Method

  • Mix flour, shortening, brown sugar and 1 cup white sugar thoroughly.
  • Remove 1 cup and reserve for crumb topping.
  • To the rest, add eggs and spices.
  • Stir soda into sour milk and add to cake mixture.
  • Beat until well mixed.
  • Grease and flour a 9 x 13-inch pan.
  • Pour cake batter into pan.
  • Crumble topping over. Sprinkle chocolate chips over topping.
  • Sprinkle 1/2 cup sugar over.
  • Bake at 350° for 20 to 25 minutes.
