Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/3 c. shredded cheese
  • 3/4 c. buttermilk

Method

  • Heat oven to 450°.
  • Cut shortening into flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt with pastry blender until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in cheese and buttermilk until dough leaves side of bowl (dough will be soft and sticky).
  • Turn dough onto lightly floured surface.
  • Knead about 10 times. Roll or pat 1/2-inch thick. Cut with floured 2 1/2-inch round cutters.
  • Place on ungreased cookie sheet about 1-inch apart.
  • Bake until golden brown, about 10 to 12 minutes.
  • Immediately remove from cookie sheet.
  • Yields 1 dozen biscuits.
