Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. water
  • 1 1/2 c. raisins
  • 2 Tbsp. Spry or other shortening
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1 Tbsp. molasses
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 1/4 c. flour (don't sift)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 c. nuts

Method

  • Put water and raisins in large pan; boil for 5 minutes (cool).
  • While still warm, add all other ingredients.
  • Mix together well.
  • Add nuts last.
  • Grease cans fully to top.
  • Half fill them.
  • Bake
  • until well brown in 350° oven for 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Cool for short time.
  • While still warm, tip out of can on wax paper.
  • (Use 3 or 4 No. 2 cans, vegetable or fruit.)
