Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 c. milk
  • 1/2 c. plain yogurt or sour cream, at room temperature
  • 1/3 c. hot water
  • 1/2 c. cocoa

Method

  • Preheat oven to 350°.
  • Cream shortening, sugar and vanilla; add eggs and mix until smooth.
  • Mix milk and yogurt together.
  • Set aside.
  • Mix all dry ingredients (except cocoa) together.
  • Add dry ingredients alternately with milk/yogurt mixture.
  • Mix cocoa with hot water to form a paste.
  • Beat into batter.
  • Pour into well-greased pan.
  • Bake at 350° for 30 minutes for 2 layers; 45 to 50 minutes for tube pan.
  • Frost with buttercream frosting.
