Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 (15 oz.) jar applesauce
  • 1 1/4 c. sugar
  • 2/3 c. shortening
  • 1/3 c. milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. dark seedless raisins
  • 1/2 c. chopped nuts

Method

  • Have prepared a 13 x 9-inch baking pan, greased and floured. In large bowl, mix all ingredients except raisins and nuts.
  • Beat at low speed until well mixed, scraping sides of bowl frequently. Beat on high speed 3 minutes, occasionally scraping bowl.
  • Add raisins and nuts which have been coated with a bit of flour.
  • Bake 40 to 45 minutes in 350° oven.
  • Cool on wire rack.
  • Frost with your favorite caramel icing.
  • Serves 12.
