- 1/4 c. butter or margarine
- 1/4 c. light brown sugar
- 2 1/2 c. sliced apples
- 2 tsp. lemon juice
- 1/3 c. shortening
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 2/3 c. sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 egg, well beaten
- 1 1/2 c. sifted flour
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 2/3 c. milk
Method
- Melt butter in an 8 x 8-inch pan; sprinkle with brown sugar. Arrange apples, overlapping wedges on sugar.
- Sprinkle with lemon juice.
- Cream shortening, sugar and vanilla together.
- Add egg and beat vigorously.
- Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with milk.
- Pour batter over fruit.
- Bake at 325° about 1 hour; cool 5 minutes, then turn upside down on a serving plate.
