Ingredients

  • 1/4 c. butter or margarine
  • 1/4 c. light brown sugar
  • 2 1/2 c. sliced apples
  • 2 tsp. lemon juice
  • 1/3 c. shortening
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 2/3 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 egg, well beaten
  • 1 1/2 c. sifted flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 2/3 c. milk

Method

  • Melt butter in an 8 x 8-inch pan; sprinkle with brown sugar. Arrange apples, overlapping wedges on sugar.
  • Sprinkle with lemon juice.
  • Cream shortening, sugar and vanilla together.
  • Add egg and beat vigorously.
  • Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with milk.
  • Pour batter over fruit.
  • Bake at 325° about 1 hour; cool 5 minutes, then turn upside down on a serving plate.
