Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. active dry yeast
  • 1/2 c. warm water
  • 4 3/4 c. flour
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2/3 c. shortening
  • 1 1/4 c. buttermilk

Method

  • Grease baking sheets; set aside.
  • Soften yeast in warm water; set aside.
  • In mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.
  • Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Add shortening, yeast and buttermilk.
  • Stir just until dough clings together.
  • Knead gently on lightly floured surface 10 to 12 strokes.
  • Cut with floured biscuit cutter.
  • Place on cookie sheets, folding biscuit circles in half.
  • Bake at 400° for 15 to 20 minutes.
