Ingredients
- 1 pkg. active dry yeast
- 1/2 c. warm water
- 4 3/4 c. flour
- 1 Tbsp. sugar
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 1 1/2 tsp. salt
- 2/3 c. shortening
- 1 1/4 c. buttermilk
Method
- Grease baking sheets; set aside.
- Soften yeast in warm water; set aside.
- In mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.
- Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add shortening, yeast and buttermilk.
- Stir just until dough clings together.
- Knead gently on lightly floured surface 10 to 12 strokes.
- Cut with floured biscuit cutter.
- Place on cookie sheets, folding biscuit circles in half.
- Bake at 400° for 15 to 20 minutes.
