Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 stick margarine
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 3 c. plain flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Method

  • Cream shortening, margarine and sugar, beating well.
  • Combine sifted flour, baking powder, soda and salt.
  • Add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture.
  • Add vanilla; beat well.
  • Add eggs last.
  • Beat well and pour batter into 3 greased and floured 9-inch round cake pans. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes at 350°.
  • Frost with Burnt Caramel Icing.
