- 2 c. milk
- 1 cake yeast
- 2 1/4 c. lukewarm water
- 1 Tbsp. sugar
- 6 c. white flour
- 1 c. dark syrup
- 1 1/2 tsp. fennel seed
- 1 1/2 tsp. anise seed
- 1/2 c. molasses
- 8 c. rye flour
- 1 Tbsp. salt
- grated orange rind (2 oranges)
- 1/4 c. chopped candied fruit
- 1 c. brown sugar (loose pack)
- 4 Tbsp. shortening
Method
- Scald milk and cool to lukewarm.
- Soften yeast in 1/4 cup lukewarm water.
- Add sugar 1 1/2 cup lukewarm water and milk.
- Add white flour and beat well.
- Let rise until double in bulk.
