Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 c. flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 2/3 c. cold water
  • oil for deep fat frying

Method

  • Sift dry ingredients.
  • Add shortening and cut in with knives until blended.
  • Gradually add enough cold water to make a pastry consistency.
  • Turn out on floured board and knead until smooth. Cover and let rest for 5 minutes.
  • Roll out onto board in a 12 x 15-inch rectangle, 1/8 to 1/16-inch thickness.
  • Cut into 2 x 3-inch pieces or 3-inch squares.
  • Cover with wax paper.
  • Heat oil.
  • Drop squares, turning 3 or 4 times while frying.
  • Drain and serve. Serve with honey.
