Ingredients

  • 1/4 c. butter or margarine, melted
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. flour
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 c. milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 to 2 Tbsp. rum or bourbon or more to taste or use 1/2 to 1 tsp. rum flavoring

Method

  • Mix flour and sugar into margarine; stir in milk until smooth. Bring to simmer; cook for about 5 minutes, until thickened.
  • Beat egg in a small cup.
  • Add some of the hot mixture to the egg, beating well.
  • Stir egg into sauce mixture, beating until smooth. Cook 3 to 5 minutes, until thickened.
  • Do not boil.
  • Remove from heat.
  • Add vanilla and rum or bourbon.
  • Serve warm over bread pudding.
