Ingredients

  • 4 c. sifted flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. cocoa
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 1 1/2 c. white sugar
  • 1 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 1/2 c. buttermilk
  • 2 tsp. vanilla

Method

  • Sift flour, soda, salt and cocoa together twice.
  • Cream shortening and add to sugar and beat until creamy.
  • Add eggs, one at a time.
  • Beat well after each addition.
  • Sift in dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk.
  • Blend until smooth.
  • Add vanilla. Bake in three 9-inch layer pans at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes.
