Ingredients

  • 3 c. flour
  • 1 c. brown sugar
  • 1 c. granulated sugar
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1/8 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. sour milk or buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 Tbsp. baking soda

Method

  • Blend flour, sugars, and shortening.
  • Reserve 1 1/2 cup of flour mixture for topping. Add milk and baking soda together until soda is dissolved. Add to remaining flour mixture, along with eggs, baking powder and salt.
  • Blend until all is moistened. Batter will be lumpy.
  • Pour into greased 9 inch x 13 inch pan. Place reserved flour mixture on top.
  • Bake at 375° for 45 minutes.
