Ingredients

  • 1 loaf Italian bread, cut into 1-inch thick slices
  • 8 large eggs
  • 3 c. milk
  • 4 tsp. granulated sugar
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. vanilla
  • 2 Tbsp. butter, cut into pieces

Method

  • Put bread in a well-greased 9 x 13 x 2-inch pan.
  • Mix other ingredients, except butter, and pour over bread in pan.
  • Cover with foil; refrigerate for 4 to 36 hours.
  • Uncover, dot with butter and bake at 350° for 45 to 50 minutes, until puffy and lightly browned.
  • Let stand 5 minutes before serving.
  • Serves 8 to 10.
  • Serve with powdered sugar or syrup.
