Ingredients

  • 2 c. sweet milk or 1 c. water and 1 c. milk
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 yeast cakes
  • 6 c. sifted, light, plain flour

Method

  • Put milk in 2-quart saucepan; add sugar.
  • Add shortening. Scald milk (do not boil) with sugar and shortening added; remove from heat.
  • Add salt.
  • Let cool to room temperature.
  • Add yeast cakes and stir until dissolved.
  • Beat in flour gradually, then toss on floured breadboard; knead lightly.
  • Place back in pan and let rise until doubled, approximately 2 hours.
  • Take out of pan and knead again.
  • Roll dough and make into rolls.
  • Place on lightly greased baking sheets.
  • Spoon liquid shortening or melted butter on tops of rolls.
  • Cover and let rise in warm place approximately 1 1/2 hours or until doubled in size.
  • Bake in preheated 425° oven for 15 minutes.
