Ingredients

  • 1 x 18.7cl bottle of full bodied Spanish red wine (Rioja is ideal)
  • 1 Navel orange
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 mulled wine sachet, OR 1 bayleaf and a grating of fresh nutmeg
  • 150 ml (5.3fl oz) water`

Method

  • Place the wine, water, sugar, cinnamon stick, spice sachet (or bay leaf and nutmeg), sliced lemons and a few slices of Navel orange into a large saucepan.
  • Heat to just below boiling point and hold this temperature for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove the sachet (or bay leaf) and strain into heatproof glasses.
  • Serve with Navel orange slices and a few segments of tangerine, clementine or satsuma - whichever tickles your fancy.
