Ingredients

  • 5 c. self-rising flour
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1 c. lard
  • 2 c. buttermilk
  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 1/4 c. warm water

Method

  • Dissolve yeast in warm water; set aside.
  • In large bowl, sift together 4 cups flour and baking soda.
  • Cut in lard until it looks like coarse crumbs.
  • Mix together the remaining 1 cup flour with buttermilk and yeast mixture to the flour mixture.
  • Mix well. Turn out on lightly floured surface and knead.
  • Place in greased bowl, covered, in refrigerator.
  • Biscuits are ready to bake at any time.
  • When you are ready to bake, roll out and cut as many as needed.
  • Bake in a 425° oven for about 15 minutes.
  • Yields about 3 dozen biscuits.
