Ingredients

  • 2 c. sugar
  • 1 1/2 c. shortening (butter flavor)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 c. molasses
  • 5 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. + 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 tsp. ground ginger
  • 1 tsp. ground cloves
  • sugar

Method

  • Mix 2 cups sugar and shortening; beat until light.
  • Add eggs and molasses and continue to beat until light.
  • Add flour, salt, baking soda and spices.
  • Mix until mixture leaves sides of bowl (you may need to add a little more flour).
  • Roll dough into walnut sized balls; roll into sugar to coat.
  • Place on ungreased baking sheet 2 inches apart and bake 12 to 14 minutes (shorter for soft cookie and longer for crisp) at 350°.
  • Cool on racks.
  • Dough and/or cookies freeze very well.
  • Makes a bazillion cookies.
