Ingredients

  • 2 c. uncooked macaroni
  • 3/4 c. chopped onion
  • 3/4 c. chopped green pepper
  • 1 lb. lean ground beef
  • 1 tsp. salad oil
  • 1 (15 1/2 oz.) jar spaghetti sauce
  • 1/4 c. water
  • 1 tsp. each salt and sweet basil
  • 2 tsp. butter or margarine
  • 3 tsp. flour
  • 2 c. milk
  • 8 oz. pkg. Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper

Method

  • Cook and drain macaroni.
  • In large skillet, saute onion, green pepper and beef in salad oil.
  • Drain excess fat.
  • Stir in 1 1/4 cups spaghetti sauce, 1 teaspoon salt,
  • basil
  • and water. Bring to a boil, cook 5 minutes, stirring often.
  • In
  • saucepan, melt butter, add flour and gradually blend in
  • milk.
  • Cook until thick.
  • Remove from heat and add
  • cheese,
  • 1/2
  • teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper.
  • Stir until
  • cheese melts.
  • Pour meat sauce into a 3 quart greased casserole dish or
  • 13
  • 9 x 2-inch pan. Spoon macaroni on top.
  • Smother with cheese sauce. Bake at 400° for 30 minutes.
  • Drizzle
  • remaining
  • sauce on top. Serves 6 to 8.
