Ingredients

  • 5 c. flour
  • 1/3 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 2 pkg. dry yeast
  • 2 c. buttermilk
  • 1/4 c. warm water

Method

  • Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, soda and salt.
  • Cut in shortening.
  • Dissolve yeast in the 1/4 cup water; stir in buttermilk.
  • Add to dry mix and stir until blended.
  • Knead on floured board just to hold together on lightly floured surface; roll to 1/2-inch thickness.
  • Cut with biscuit cutter and place on greased cookie sheet; cover and let rise 45 minutes to 1 hour. Bake at 450° for 10 minutes.
  • Makes 2 1/2 dozen.
