Ingredients

  • 4 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 1/4 c. lukewarm water
  • 1 c. water
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. melted shortening
  • 2 egg whites, stiffly beaten

Method

  • Sift flour. Dissolve 1 package yeast in 1/4 cup lukewarm water. Combine 1 cup water, sugar, salt, melted shortening and the dissolved yeast mixture. Lightly fold in beaten egg whites. Add enough of the sifted flour to make a soft dough. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Allow the dough to rise twice. After the second rising, punch down and knead for about 1 minute, then let rest, covered, for about 10 minutes before shaping into 12 oblong (or round) pieces. Place them about 3-inches apart on a greased baking sheet.
