Ingredients

  • 2 12 cups sugar
  • 9 tablespoons melted lard (I know, I know)
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 cups sour milk (4 tsp vinegar to 4 cups milk)
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 18 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 7 -8 cups flour

Method

  • Add baking soda to the sour milk.
  • Mix sugar, shortening, eggs, and salt in a large bowl.
  • Add sour milk and soda mixture.
  • Sift flour, baking powder, and nutmeg into the previous ingredients.
  • Mix until easy to handle.
  • Roll to about a 1/2 inch thickness (as if for biscuits) then cut with a doughnut cutter.
  • Add flour as necessary to prevent excessive stickiness.
  • Fry in deep fat at 350F until brown on one side.
  • Turn and brown the other side.
  • These are good plain, but can be coated with powdered sugar while warm.
